Zen and the Asteroid By David Ortega
Northern New Mexico Digital Video, (www.NMDigitalVideo.com) is nearing completion of their feature-length, independently produce filmed called: Zen & the Asteroid, a Taoist, Sci-fi Comedy.
After 4 years, a final 110 minute edit is complete. The next 3 months will focus on composing an original musical score, audio sound effects, animation and special visual effects. Completion is scheduled for June.
“This movie has been my creative outlet for the last 4 years,” says Dan Otero, co-writer and co-director of ZATA. “I am very excited that the end is in sight.”
“Now that ZATA is almost done,” says Javier Arellano, co-writer and co-director, “we’ve begun storyboarding our next film called The Dark Saga. The knowledge we gained on this project will make our next project even better.”
ZATA incorporates the skills of 4 animators. Jeff Baker at www.dancingbeargraphics.com from Tijeras, NM. Jason Harris from Puyallup, Washington, near Tacoma. Jeremiah Dyson from Arroyo Seco, NM. Dannu Hutwohl from Santa Fe, NM.
Jonathan
Dodge Mayer, from LavaBoxMusic (www.lavabox.com)
is composing the original score and doing all sound design. He currently
lives in San Francisco, CA. “My first
love is writing,” says Dan Otero, “But while making this movie I became
very proficient at non-linear digital video editing. We shot 50 hours of
raw footage for ZATA—roughly 3000 minutes. I’ve edited this footage down
to a polished 110 minutes.” In addition
to the work done for Zen & the Asteroid, NNMDV has also completed a
short film called The Troll’s Demise. “The
Troll’s Demise is a 14 minute film that takes place in the same
story-universe as ZATA,” says Dan Otero. “It’s like a tangential
epilogue to the ZATA story.” The Troll’s
Demise was accepted to the 2003 Santa Fe Film Festival, where it
received good press and good reviews by the lucky folks who got to see
it. DVD copies will be available soon. “The Troll
character appears both in The Troll’s Demise and in Zen & the Asteroid,”
says Javier Arellano. “It’s a character conceived by Wil Albarez, from
Santa Fe.” “Wil answered a call for actors that we put in the newspaper,” says Dan. “After talking with him, we discovered that his talents included fire-eating, blow-outs (Fireballs) and other extreme skills. In fact, Wil has his own performance troupe called Firehazard (www.wilextreme.com). After hearing all this, I went home and wrote his Troll character into the movie. It was a serendipitous experience.”
“We’ve
worked with some very talented actors and technicians on this project,”
says Javier. “Bob Alexander from LXR Design (www.lxrdesign.com)
is one individual who jumped into our project mid-way thru and ended up
as our Director of Photography.” What is
this movie about, anyway? Zen & the Asteroid is a Taoist, Sci-Fi Comedy
for all ages. It’s about Spaceships and Secret Councils, Mad Doctors and
Attractive Androids, Zen Koan Questions and a big Asteroid headed
towards Earth. The year is
2073 a.c.e. and the eternal spirit of Zen decides to have some fun with
an asteroid. The Council gathers on the Mars moonbase Phobos, and decide
to send the Investigators—Mars’ most talented bounty hunters—after Zen. Upon
completion of the movie in July, NNMDV plans to premier the film in
Espanola, NM, submit to local and national film festivals, and sell DVD
copies. Innésence School in Pojoaque Do You Want to Enrich Your Child’s Life?Stop!Read! Think!
